This entry includes two write-ups and two infographics that show how the main suspect’s confession and the CCTV footage of the shooting were reported in the Sinhala-language main news broadcasts on television. (all are in Sinhala).en_US
On July 10, 2024, TV Derana, Hiru TV, Sirasa, Rupavahini, and Swarnavahini reported on a statement given to the police by a suspect in the “Club Wasantha” murder case. Siyatha and ITN did not report the story. Although Siyatha received the video footage, it announced during its news bulletin that it would not broadcast it, citing media ethics; a commendable decision. TV Derana and Hiru TV aired the footage on YouTube and in their prime-time news bulletins, while Sirasa, Swarnavahini, and Siyatha published it only on YouTube. Siyatha, Hiru TV, and TV Derana also issued warnings about sensitive content. Broadcasting such CCTV footage, even when blurred, can shock viewers and violates media ethical guidelines.en_US
